What We Do

The Central Sanitary Landfill team takes multiple steps to protect the environment. All waste is screened to ensure unacceptable waste is not accepted, and our standard operating procedures are designed to exceed MDEQ standards. More than 303 acres of the Central Sanitary Landfill property are dedicated to non-landfill operations.

Protection of all water sources is a priority at Central Sanitary Landfill. The Landfill is designed with a highly engineered composite liner system designed to contain any liquids that percolate through the solid waste. The liquids are transferred to a water treatment facility. Surface water at the site is controlled through a series of diversion berms and drainage ditches to preserve its quality. In addition, Central Sanitary Landfill assesses groundwater with 67 individual groundwater monitoring wells. Each well is routinely tested.

Landfill gas is collected through a system of 46 extraction wells. The collected landfill gas is converted to renewable energy. In addition, the Landfill’s surface and exterior gas probes are also regularly monitored to ensure the landfill gas system is operating properly.
